Conostom

Looking north from the summit of Conostom, with views over Great Bernera and the Carloway headland

Just to the south of Great Bernera lies a ridge of hills, the highest of which is 256m above sea level. Its name is Conostom.

A walk up to the summit affords spectacular views in all directions, over the islands of Bernera and beyond to the north, to the hills of Uig and Harris to the west and south, and to the flat moorlands of Lewis to the east.

The route to the ridge is a pleasant trek which starts by following a small river through an impressive gorge, passes many freshwater lochs and involves a climb over exposed rocks at the top.

Start the route by following the river through the gorge

Park in the layby a little way south of Lundale and cross the road, heading for the river (you need to climb over the fence to reach it). The maps below depict the route in two different scales.

Follow the gorge upstream, past a shieling, and then keep heading westwards, negotiating your way as best you can around the lochs and the streams feeding them.

You'll notice a shieling on the right further upstream
There is no designated footpath, so cross the streams the best way you can

After a while the Conostom summit will come into view. On the eastern side (as you approach) is a vertical stone wall. Take the southern route around this wall to reach the summit.

Take a rest, have a picnic and enjoy the views and the peace and tranquility for a while.

Take a well earned rest when you reach the top

When you’re ready to descend, you can come down the same way, or via the steeper north side of the hill. Whichever way you choose, aim for the river and the gorge to return to the road.

The distance from the road to the summit is approximately 2km. Allow three hours for the trek there and back. Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes and dress appropriately in case the weather changes. Take plenty of water and provisions, and keep dogs under close control due to grazing sheep and ground-nesting birds.

  1. Lovely to hear from you both. I imagine it’s a bit chilly where you are. We now have a manager for our holiday lets so we mean to make more time for travel. You never know…
